Exotic Animals

Hello Elephants

How many people ever get the opportunity to even see an elephant up close, much less actually touch it? You don’t have to travel to far off destinations….just go to Wilstem Ranch, located between Paoli and French Lick Indiana. For the past few months, the ranch has hosted three African elephants on their property. If you’re there at 4pm on a Saturday, for a small fee you’ll be transported by wagon up through the fields to see them. A shaded canopy and bleachers are provided for your comfort while you get to hear all the interesting facts about these gentle creatures.

Striped Visitors

Don’t wait too long though, the elephants will be leaving mid September. However, zebras will be coming in next. Besides the exotic animals, some of Wilstem’s other furry family include a baby deer, burrow, llama, a variety of goats and several horses. The horses can be rented for trail riding or for guided walks for the little tikes.

Stay the Night

Their cozy cabins can sleep two people or up to 21. Enjoy a private swimming pool, basketball, volleyball, zip lines, and ATV tours. If you’re looking for a place to have a wedding or private party, their gorgeous, restored barn loft, complete with kitchen and bar, is the perfect setting.

A Peaceful 120 Acres

Experience Peace

Do you love to camp? Looking for someplace new? Blue River Valley Farm in Milltown will even provide a tent and air mattress for you. Not into the camping scene so much? Then maybe their newly renovated three-bedroom, one bath colonial farm house is more your style. If you want, you can go gather your own organic farm fresh eggs from the chicken coop for breakfast in the morning, or pick fresh vegetables from the garden during summer and early fall. You say you like fresh fruits? Then while you’re taking a nature walk around the 120-acre farm, take along a bucket and pick some blackberries, raspberries, gooseberries, peaches, pears or apples along the way.

Scenic Blue River

Since the Blue River joins the property, bring your fishing poles or float down the river on a raft or canoe. Feed the chickens, bottle-feed the goats, and make friends with some of the other animal family, which includes several dogs and cats. There is even a “Get Acquainted With Nature” program for the young folks.

50-year History

Blue River Valley Farm has been in the Young family for nearly 50 years. It’s been transformed from a working cattle and hog farm to a tranquil retreat. Rent the colonial house and sit back on one of the covered porches, prop your feet up, and enjoy the landscaping, water features or hot tub, while you take in the sights and sounds of the surrounding nature and wildlife. Bet you can feel yourself relaxing by just thinking about it, can’t you?

Wood Masterpieces

If you like rustic artwork and home decor, you’ll love the masterpieces created by award winning chainsaw carver Jason Emmons from Bear Hollow Wood Carvers. What starts out as a simple log or stump, ends up as an amazing one-of-a-kind piece. Sports mascots, wildlife, Indians, benches…you name it and he can carve it. And in hardly no time at all!

Chainsaw Art

One of the first artists to be juried into the Indiana Artists Group, Jason travels the country as part of the Echo Outdoor Power Equipment National Carving Team. You’ll be blown away at how effortlessly he wields a chainsaw to bring a piece of wood to life. Think you’d like to see all of this for yourself? Then make plans to come to the annual Block Bash, held each year in September in French Lick. You’ll have three days to see some of the top chainsaw carvers in the country, enjoy live entertainment, visit the Artists Marketplace full of vendors, and tour the wine and beer gardens and food court.

New Location

Bear Hollow is now in their new location about a block away onto Brick Street, near the French Lick West Baden Museum and across the street from 33 Brick Street Restaurant. Be sure to stop by and check out their brand new showroom. You can also visit their website for a schedule of additional shows and demonstrations.

76th Senior PGA Championship

Pete Dye Golf Course

French Lick Resort is honored to host the 76th Senior PGA Championship May 19-24 on the famed Pete Dye golf course. Presented by KitchenAid, this event promises to offer a fabulous experience to participants and spectators alike. Besides being very challenging, the Pete Dye course affords some of the most breathtaking views in the entire state of Indiana.

As you can imagine with an event of this magnitude, there will be parking opportunities in several locations throughout town. There will be free public parking at the airport, with complimentary shuttles provided from all public lots to the main entrance gate.

The Championship Shop is located to the left of the 18th green and adjacent to the Pete Dye Mansion. It will offer a variety of official Championship merchandise, men’s/women’s apparel, outerwear, headwear, golf accessories and gifts.

You’ll want to check out the KitchenAid Experience during the week as well. Located near the Pete Dye Mansion and open to the public, you can watch product demonstrations and be one of the first to see KitchenAid’s new line of appliances. Be sure to submit your entry into the drawing for product discounts, rounds of golf at French Lick Resort, upgraded tickets to the Senior PGA Championship, plus the Grand Prize — a KitchenAid grill!

Another impressive feature will be the Mercedes-Benz Performance Center. Located near the Mansion and open to all spectators, you’ll be able to view some of the latest models on display, including the all-new 2016 GLE that’s set to hit showroom floors this summer.

The Senior PGA Championship is a perfect event for a company outing or to entertain your business clients and guests. To accommodate this, you can reserve the Golf Shop & Patio, private Skyboxes or the Champions Club.

Tickets to the event are now on sale and start at only $15. Up to four complimentary Junior admission tickets are available with every paid adult ticket, for ages 17 and under. Plus, PGA of America is proud to honor the men and women who serve our country in the Armed Forces with complimentary daily grounds tickets. This also includes an accompanying spouse.

Squire Boone Caverns

Spring Break

Lots of schools are out on Spring Break these next few weeks and folks are going to be looking for new places to explore. If you haven’t been to Squire Boone Caverns and Ziplines, now’s the time! Plan on spending several hours there because they’ve got lots to see and do.

Go Underground

Learn about the underground cave world by taking one of their tours. They have several throughout the day. If you’ve always thought you’d be claustrophobic inside a cave, you’ll be pleasantly surprised at how enormous this one is. And you’ll be fascinated by all the interesting rock formations and the waterfall. Stop by the restored grist mill and watch as it churns out mixes for biscuits, pancakes, muffins and more. By this time you may be ready for a light lunch or a quick snack. You can get that in the candy shop. Then stroll thru the Pioneer Village to see what everyday life looked like in years past. The village doesn’t really become active though until Memorial Day weekend, so you’ll want to come back again later in the year. Are you the type that thrives on an adrenaline rush? Then soar through the tree tops on one of the six ziplines, or test your nerves by crossing the suspension bridge. The ziplines are open from March-November. And before you leave, be sure to stop by the rock shop to get a souvenir for the day. They have one of the largest rock shops in Indiana, with over 100 varieties of sparkling gems and minerals.

Group Fun

Squire Boone Caverns and Ziplines is the perfect outing for a scout troop, sports group, or just a fun day out with your friends. Coming up on April 4th they’ll have a Wild West Re-enactment. Here’s your chance to have your kids or spouse thrown in jail for only $1! All in fun of course.
